With sights including the tallest sand dunes in North America and the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Range of the Rocky Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve has some truly unique sights and activities. Roam throughout the dunes on foot and just don't lose sight of the way back home: the rolling waves of sand make it easy to lose your sense of direction quickly. Next to the visitor center is a small creek that rises to much higher levels during the spring and early summer and creates a little beach-like area for fun and games. Spend a few days and camp in the park's 88-spot campground or opt for one of the nearby hotels that cater to out-of-town visitors. The dunes are about 171 miles by car southwest of Colorado Springs, close to the town of Alamosa.
Open daily, year round.
Entry fee (7-day pass): Adults (16+) $3; Children 15 and under are free.
